Please share your comments about your experience : This is a campground, cabin rental, restaurant and Marina operation. We arrived the end of April and immediately began prepping to open for May 1st. When we arrived, the owner let us know that the other workampers never showed. He has a full time maintenance man and a full time housekeeper. He has 6 main rental cabins, 1 lake side rental and a half a dozen RV spots, two of which are all that he rents out due to the rest being seasonal. There are also park models on site that are privately owned. Owner was very specific on the phone and in the contract about wages, duties required and hours that we would work. And it has been exactly as he stated. We got a couple more workampers a month into the season, one of which left after a month or so. The only time my husband and I didn't have the same shifts has been when we were short staffed, or now that we are the only two left. We have always had the same days off. The work is typical, and nothing extreme. But you MUST be physically active due to the fact this is a marina as well. We launch boats, kayaks, stand up paddle boards and canoes. Pay is tiered according to the jobs that you are doing. And the owner expects you to handle your time card; you know what you have done, you write it down. We have never had an issue with our checks or hours being paid. We are paid every two weeks, with a check. We have mobile deposit ability so no big deal. If you don't have that you can cash the checks at his bank. Now... some negatives: His family is on site. So there has been some drama. If you can stick to your guns and stay clear of the drama, then no biggy. We learned that about 2 months in... After that it was great. The FT housekeeper is a little much to deal with, but again... If you can steer clear of that drama it's not an issue. You just do your job, clock your time, and enjoy the time you have in the Black Hills. It's pretty simple. The owner is former military, and does NOT want to hold your hand. So, sometimes communication is lacking. Sometimes you just have to make a decision and go with it. As long as the place keeps running, and money keeps coming in, he's fairly easy to get along with. Overall, we have loved it. There have been moments, but isn't that the way anywhere? The entire property is up for sale.
Did you receive any special benefits or perks while workamping? : There were an abundance of awesome perks with this job!! For one, we have access to any and all rentals, including wave runners and pontoons, before and after hours. The only cost to us is the fuel we use. There is a discount at marina store and restaurant. We got Black Hill VIP passes to all of the local attractions, which we took FULL advantage of. The biggest perk is being smack dab in the middle of the beautiful Black Hills and working every day at a gorgeous lake!!
