Please share your comments about your experience : We started working at Heartland April 2018 and continued through the work season. We had a nice pull through site with FHU, WIFI and Cable. This was a paid position by the hour with the first 16 hours per couple (8 hours per person) going toward our site. After the initial 16 hours we were paid $11.00 per hour, per person with a bonus if we stayed until the end of the season. It was understood we were paid for the hours actually worked, and we did keep timesheets. It was also understood we could work the required 16 hours per couple, per week for our site and be done, or we could work from 24 to 30 hours per person with paid hours after the first 8 . We had 3 consecutive days off each week. It was our decision if we wanted to work on our days off for additional pay. At no time did we feel our jobs would be in jeopardy if we did not work extra hours. When we started in April there were 9 couples and one single lady. After the first month one couple left because of a conflict with another workcamper. The second couple left due to a family issue that needed resolved. The third couple left in May because of a discrepancy of what they thought their jobs would be (from former camp hosting jobs) and what the job entailed. We very much enjoyed our time at Heartland and the folks we worked with. The owner of the RV Park was very fair. At no time did he ever yell or scream at folks, or talk derogatory toward anyone. I know first hand that he tried to work with one couple by changing their positions within the park several times but to no avail. Sometimes when folks cannot see eye to eye on a situation its just better to move on for everyone, including them. Several of us will be returning in the spring for another season at Heartland. We are excited to be returning back. The RV park is very nice, the area is beautiful and it will be a whole new season for fun, making new friends and enjoying our old ones from this past summer.

Did you receive any special benefits or perks while workamping? : Received a discount book to most of Black Hills area attractions.

Please share your comments about your experience : Arrived at the park to discover that the owner intended for the workampers to complete his expansion and building of a 4000 sf event hall. He thought he had made an excellent business decision to hire workampers at $11/hr to do the work of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters, pool repair, landscapers and any other physical work needed. Event hall did not have electrician to sign off on installation so all the panels had to come off the wall to reveal wiring for inspection. Owner also discovered that he could not use workampers to wire his new sites and install pedestals. We lasted for a about six weeks before admitting could not and would not do the hard physical labor being asked of us. Much more was being expected of us than we have experienced in previous workamping positions. We believed the owner should have hired professionals to do his expansion projects. He also should have informed his perspective workampers during the telephone interview of his intentions and expectations. We never would have accepted the job and traveled to SD had we been properly informed. I did not find any of the 8 couples who were hired that admitted to being told upfront about what we would be expected to do. We left after my husband spent 6 hours (on his off day) in a ditch with a shovel and pick busting concrete around a swimming pool looking for a leak. We were the third couple to leave. This was our experience and I do not intend to discourage anyone from accepting employment at Heartland, I merely mean to inform you about our experience so that you can ask appropriate questions and know what you are getting into if you choose to work there. Knowledge is power.

Did you receive any special benefits or perks while workamping? : The Black Hills/Badlands area issues VIP passes to workers in the area for discounted or free admission to many area attractions. I believe these are valued at around $400.
