Please share your comments about your experience : This is a fun and good job, you not only give the history of the lighthouse you also run the gift shop and sell various lighthouse related items which generates funds to maintain the lighthouse. Granted the work can be hard at times but the benefits of helping out the friends of Cape Meares and the state parks is gratifying. You are given a fhu site at Cape Lookout State Park, and drive 10 miles to the lighthouse, you are to be there to open the lighthouse at 11am and close at 4pm, 3 days one week and 4 days the next week. It is a rewarding position and allows you to spend time on the Oregon Coast. The shop manager is extremely passionate about the lighthouse and how it should be presented.

Did you receive any special benefits or perks while workamping? : Fuel stiphon paid at the end of the month for driving to and from the lighthouse as well as a rv site.

    Job Title: Lighthouse Host

Did you receive Wages or Stipend ?: No

Please share your comments about your experience : This is a lot of work that is unappreciated. This volunteer position requires 3-4 full days per week at a busy lighthouse. Hosts are required to give tours and operate the gift shop at the same time, a lot of work! The Lighthouse is operated by the Friends Group and that is the problem. They take the hosts for granted. The shop manager is most unkind. We felt like indentured servants, not volunteers being helpful. In fact, the paid staff is treated with much more respect than the volunteers. The main mission of the friends group appears to be making money from the gift shop, not protecting the lighthouse or education. Hosts are provided a full-hookup campsite at the very busy Cape Lookout State Park. The park is reasonably maintained and has a nice beach. There is a laundry facility, and hosts can receive mail onsite. There is a 15 mile commute on poorly maintained roads to the lighthouse (gas mileage is reimbursed). The Oregon State Park staff is friendly and enjoyable. The real issue with this park is working with the friends group, we felt unappreciated, over-worked, and treated less than respectfully.

Did you receive any special benefits or perks while workamping? : Mileage reimbursement for commute to lighthouse, store discount.
