Please share your comments about your experience : Experience was not what we expected as communication by Refuge staff was poor and schedule was not monitored resulting in people not showing up for their duties. There was no designated volunteer coordinator (but at end of our stay they did hire someone). Volunteers were used to enforce rules regarding manatee encounters by tourists and locals which made for uncomfortable situations and confrontations. There is a large local volunteer group; they were territorial and not friendly to the RV volunteers and some were not trustworthy. Volunteer duties are located about 30 min from volunteer campground. Schedule is 3 days on, 3 off fixed days. Pros: Campsites are nice, govt vehicle provided, lots of kayaking opportunities, good seafood in the area, nearby grocery store. New visitor center scheduled to open and will be better than the current one.
