Please share your comments about your experience : Volunteering at Dade Historic Battlefield State Park was a truly new experience. They are a "Day Use" park located close to I-75 within the town limits. It is a relatively small park that hosts a yearly re-enactment battle. There is a museum/visitor's center on the property along with picnic tables, bathrooms and walking trails. The park personnel are extremely nice and hosts several events each month.
Volunteers are asked to help maintain the facilities and grounds, participate in the events and collect entrance fees on occasion. We learned quite a lot about pioneer life. Generally, you are asked to complete your assigned tasks such as mowing the grass, cleaning the bathrooms, etc. during the week but mainly they ask the volunteers to assist with the many events they host. There is the set-up, dressing up and playing a role during the event and the taken down and clean-up afterwards.
Did you receive any special benefits or perks while workamping? : Each site comes with water/electric (30/50amp) and sewer on site as well as a picnic table and fire pit if you would like one. There is an extra refrigerator and freezer, shower and laundry facilities in the shop available to all the volunteers. They also try to maintain and have available golf carts for the volunteers and staff members.
They try to have scheduled days off for each of the volunteers but the events will take precedence. If you are willing to work more than 20 hours a week they are very appreciative.
